Chelsea's Unbeaten Run, Cole Palmer's Big Break, and Rising Stars: What You Didn't See Coming.
Chelsea fans have plenty to cheer for in the form that they are in. Six straight wins, 3-0 against Aston Villa and good news on the huddle, it's been a good few days for the Blues. Here's a rundown of everything you may have missed at Stamford Bridge this week.
Dublin Earn Favorable FA Cup Draw
Dion Dublin offered Chelsea fans a Christmas present on Monday evening when he picked League Two's bottom club Morecambe as their FA Cup third-round opponents. This home game comes in early January, right in the gap between the Premier League games and gives Enzo Maresca the opportunity to rotate his team and rest some key personnel during the hectic holiday season.
Unai Emery Praises Chelsea's Progress
While Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca downplayed title talk following their emphatic victory over Aston Villa, Villa manager Unai Emery did not hesitate to praise the Blues. While speaking about his team's problems, Emery emphasised Chelsea's recent comeback: "Chelsea showed this year is different. 'They are more confident, they don't have doubts like last year. They are stronger and bigger."
The fact that Villa have only managed one victory in their last eight league games shows just how hard the Premier League is becoming now that Chelsea are getting back to winning ways.
Cole Palmer Wins Major Fan Award
Chelsea's promising youngster Cole Palmer added another to his trophy cabinet. The Englishman was named Men's Player of the Year at the Football Supporters' Association Awards on Monday evening. He outplayed football's biggest names Bukayo Saka, Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland, and even Ballon d'Or winner Rodri. It's the first time a Chelsea player has won this coveted award.
Josh Acheampong Returns to Action
Young right-back Josh Acheampong returns after a long layoff. Out injured through contract problems, Acheampong returned to the side last Friday for a Premier League 2 game against Derby's U21s. It was his first start for Chelsea in any competition since September.
Maresca also confirmed that Acheampong had been with the first team ahead of their Conference League match against Heidenheim but was not included in the travelling party. With reports of good news for his contract, and with potential appearances in the forthcoming games against Astana and Shamrock Rovers, Chelsea fans can only expect the 18-year-old to remain at the club.
Villa's “Nanny MacPhee” Makes Waves
Coaches of set-pieces dominated the weekend but Aston Villa's Austin MacPhee took the spotlight, albeit in an odd way. The man with the long greying hair and personality, "Nanny MacPhee" has always been a favourite of Villa's fans and his touchline antics had provided a bit of laugher on a very difficult day for Villa at Stamford Bridge.
With Chelsea in a good position, Premier League visits to Southampton and Tottenham are likely to put the brakes on them. But with guys such as Cole Palmer out there, and youngsters such as Acheampong rising through the ranks, the Blues should be all set to keep going up.
